Rice

How much arsenic is in rice and how do I cook/rinse it to reduce arsenic?

EFSA's 2024 assessment, as recorded in the corpus, treats rice and rice products as a dietary source of inorganic arsenic and uses a reference point of 0.06 µg per kg body weight per day. A concentration in rice, and a percentage removed by rinsing or by a cooking method, were not verified in the saved sources. Those numbers are not stated.

What was verified

The reference point is a BMDL05 for skin cancer, also considered to cover lung cancer, with a margin-of-exposure approach and no tolerable daily intake. The corpus records that mean dietary exposures are in the range of that reference point. EFSA 2024. EPA's oral reference dose is on the arsenic page.

What is not available

No micrograms per kilogram of rice, no brand comparison, and no rinse or cook reduction percentage were checked against a saved study. A cooking claim without that study would be an invented number.

Heavy Metal Index

Heavy Metal Index: rice. This Heavy Metal Index URL returned HTTP 200 on 15 October 2026. Figures on this page are not copied from that index. They come from the sources named above.

What's safe to buy

The Heavy Metal Tested and Certified public register listed no licensees on 15 October 2026. That page reported 0 certified brands and 0 certified products, and it stated that no brand has completed the three-lot baseline. A specimen layout on the register is an illustration, not a licensee. This page does not name or rank any brand.

The program states that certification is a measurement of a product against a published limit, not a statement that the product is safe. If a licensee is later listed for this category, it will be on the register.
